Economic indicators suggest that Italy is moving out of the economic crisis, whereas demographic indicators are less positive. The disjuncture raises important questions of whether the economic recession triggered or sparked a new demographic regime.

We anchor the investigation in the life course perspective, and study youths’ transition to adulthood and union formationreproductive behaviors, and union dissolution, with a special emphasis on natives/migrants differentials. Comparative analyses both within Italy and with other countries are at the core of the project itself.

The project will:

1) pave the way for new theoretical developments on the social and economic determinants of family outcomes;
2) sharpen our understanding of the ways economic crises affect family outcomes
3) encourage public discussion on how economic conditions shape family patterns;
4) provide relevant information for evidence-based policies that might alleviate the detrimental effects of economic downturns on family life.
